Getting Essential Information to the People Who Need It
Not too long ago, we published an Infographic about Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, otherwise known as UHMW. We outlined the benefits in great detail – it’s tough when compared to alternative options, it’s got a very low coefficient of friction and its highly chemical resistant.
Along the same lines, another recent piece involved breaking down the types of UHMW that are available. Natural UHMW, for example, is made of up 100% Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene and is completely FDA compliant. It can be used for custom machined parts, pulleys and more. These allow the material to transfer a load in a more efficient way to the polymer’s backbone and, as a result, it’s one of the strongest thermoplastics out there today. Yes, it’s true that it can’t be injection molded – but it’s both FDA and NSF compliant, it offers incredible abrasive resistance to other types of thermoplastics, and it’s essentially the only solution for any applications that require extreme strengths.

If you’ve ever been skiing, the skid plates that guide the gondola down the line are likely made from UHMW.
